New Year, New Smile, New You!
New Year, New Smile, New You!
Staff | January 24, 2020
The start of the new year is the start of a new chapter, the chance to get things right. Resolutions to hit the gym more often, eat better and have better money management are quite common, but what about your oral health? Did you know that your mouth is considered to be the gateway to your entire body? It is, after all, the point of contact for all of the foods you consume. Let’s make 2020 the year of excellent health and we assure you, once that is in order, you’ll have one less thing to worry about!
It is important to be aware of the impact of the food and drinks you consume. Not only does the wrong foods or excessive consumption of almost any food lead to unwanted weight gain, but it can have an adverse effect on your teeth and gums. We should all know by now that excessive intake of sugary foods can lead to cavities and tooth enamel damage. Acids are produced by the plaque that builds up and this slowly erodes your teeth’s protective layer. Be aware of sour foods such as fruit juices, limes and lemons that are also culprits in eroding your enamel. Water should become your friend this year. It has zero calories and great for your overall health! If your daily indulgence is in coffee, tea or red wine, note that these beverages can overtime erase your once white smile. Limit these drinks and be sure to use fluoride toothpaste to combat any stains.
We’re not here to point fingers, but we all are at some point in time, guilty of at least one of these bad oral habits: chewing on ice, opening bottles or packages with our teeth, grinding teeth, brushing too hard or playing sports without a sports mouthguard. All of these habits cause wear and tear and wreak havoc on your pearly whites. Do yourself a favor and avoid these habits at all cost as the results can often lead to dental implants and other dental concerns.
Now some of you may be guilty of skipping your six month dental check up but we cannot stress how crucial this is to your dental health. This check up seeks to detect cavities, plaque and tartar on your teeth. It also includes a thorough examination of your gums, throat and tongue for any cause for concern. With a regular check up and cleaning, you are on your way to a healthier smile and body. You can do your part at home by brushing twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride, flossing and using a mouthwash, which all aid in keeping the bacteria and dental diseases at bay.
